Patients requiring specialised treatment are referred to appropriate healthcare facilities.

Diagnostic services

We provide diagnostic services that support maternal healthcare, women’s reproductive health and the assessment of selected medical conditions: laboratory tests, obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound, and electrocardiogram (ECG).

  • Laboratory and rapid tests

We introduced laboratory services so that our clients get holistic care, without being referred elsewhere for a diagnosis.

Our laboratory runs full blood count, blood grouping and cross-matching, biochemistry and electrolyte analysis, liver function, urea and electrolytes, VDRL (syphilis), hepatitis B, H. pylori, typhoid, malaria, pregnancy, random blood glucose and urinalysis.

We introduced the laboratory in 2022 with a grant from Growth Accelerator Malawi. Other health facilities can refer clients to us for diagnostic tests.

  • Obstetric ultrasound scanning

Obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of a pregnancy and the developing baby.

It helps healthcare professionals assess aspects of pregnancy and supports antenatal care at different stages.

    Our obstetric ultrasound services include:

    • Pregnancy dating: Estimating gestational age and supporting assessment of the expected date of delivery.
    • Fetal growth assessment: Assessing the baby’s growth using relevant ultrasound measurements.
    • Fetal position assessment: Identifying the baby’s position when clinically indicated.
    • Fetal heart activity: Assessing fetal cardiac activity when appropriate for the stage of pregnancy.
    • Pregnancy assessment: Supporting the clinical evaluation of selected pregnancy-related concerns.
    • Antenatal care support: Providing information that helps guide pregnancy monitoring, follow-up and referral where necessary.
  • Gynaecological ultrasound scanning

Gynaecological ultrasound is used to examine the female reproductive organs, including the uterus and ovaries.

It can help healthcare professionals investigate selected reproductive and pelvic health concerns.

Our gynaecological ultrasound services support assessment of:

    • Uterine conditions: Examining the uterus and identifying findings that may require further investigation.
    • Ovarian concerns: Assessing the ovaries and selected conditions, including possible ovarian cysts.
    • Pelvic pain: Supporting the investigation of pelvic pain when ultrasound is clinically appropriate.
    • Menstrual problems: Assisting with the assessment of selected concerns, including abnormal or irregular menstrual bleeding.
    • Reproductive health concerns: Providing imaging information to support clinical assessment and decisions about follow-up care or referral.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart.

It helps healthcare professionals assess heart rate and rhythm and identify certain electrical patterns that may require further investigation.

    Our ECG service supports:

    • Heart rate assessment: Recording the rate at which the heart beats.
    • Heart rhythm assessment: Identifying certain irregular heart rhythms.
    • Clinical evaluation: Supporting the assessment of selected symptoms, such as palpitations or dizziness, when clinically indicated.
    • Further investigation: Helping healthcare professionals determine whether additional tests, follow-up or referral may be required.

Results and follow-up

Depending on the type of examination and the findings, patients may receive guidance on appropriate follow-up care, further investigations or referral to another healthcare facility when specialised assessment is needed.

We aim to ensure that patients understand the purpose of their investigations and the importance of following the advice provided by their healthcare team.
