Uchembere Wabwino

About us

Safe Motherhood, since 2019

Uchembere Wabwino Maternity Clinic is a Malawian-led health facility in Mzuzu, in Malawi’s Northern Region. We offer quality and affordable sexual reproductive health services, including maternal and newborn health services, to people surrounding Mzuzu city and beyond.

Who we are

We provide specialised sexual reproductive health services at a subsidised rate in urban Mzuzu, and free services in rural communities of Mzimba District. Our clients are people who are seeking affordable, quality sexual reproductive health services but cannot afford the high cost of well-established private hospitals. Most are women aged 15 to 49, and children under five.

We offer a comprehensive package of care: maternal and child health, paediatric and under-five care, outpatient medical care, family planning, diagnostic tests, and sexual reproductive health education and counselling for adolescents in secondary schools.

We also conduct community outreach visits to reach out to the last mile, where people cannot access health care services. We visit the communities once a month at a designated health post in rural Mzimba. Our aim is to bring the services closer to the people in their communities.

Accredited care

The clinic opened on 22 August 2019, after a successful inspection and accreditation by:

  • Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi
  • Medical Council of Malawi
  • Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board

Founder’s message

“Together we can save many lives”

I lost my mother to pregnancy complications following the birth of my last-born brother. My mother was a known diabetic and hypertensive patient, and her condition worsened after the delivery. I was her caretaker at home while I was still young, until she passed away.

Growing up, I developed a passion for nursing and midwifery, and I was fortunate enough to be selected to Kamuzu College of Nursing. After my studies I worked for the government for seven years. In 2019 I started Uchembere Wabwino Maternity, meaning “Safe Motherhood”, because my wish was to create a safe place for pregnant women to deliver, and to reduce pregnancy-related complications for a better tomorrow.

During my working life as a midwife I have conducted over 6,000 safe deliveries. It is with this passion that we want to continue saving more lives and reducing maternal and neonatal deaths in our country, Malawi. With help from family members and partners we opened this clinic and furnished it with the resources it needs. Together we can save many lives.

Thank you.
