Community outreach

Reaching out to the last mile

Our aim is to bring the services closer to the people in their communities, and to empower young people through sexual reproductive health education and counselling.

Monthly outreach clinics

Once a month our team drives to Chankhanga, Elangeni and Sonda, hard-to-reach communities in rural Mzimba where the nearest health facility is very far away. We run these outreach clinics under the Mzimba North District Health Office, using our own transport.

Young people and communities

Sexual and reproductive health beyond the clinic

Alongside clinical care, we work in schools and communities: SRHR education, menstrual health support, community advocacy, youth empowerment and digital health innovation. Through these complementary approaches, we help women and young people access accurate information, appropriate healthcare and the support they need to make informed decisions about their health and future.

SRHR education in schools

Knowledge for healthier, more confident young people

We conduct school-based sexual and reproductive health education to equip learners with age-appropriate, accurate information that supports their health, safety and future. Our Uche Youth for Change team runs these sessions in secondary schools, including Mchengautuba CDSS and Chris Academy; in 2022 we introduced the programme in 15 secondary schools.

Our education sessions help learners understand their bodies, recognise risks, challenge misinformation and know where to seek reliable information and appropriate healthcare.

Menstrual health and hygiene

Promoting menstrual health, dignity and confidence

We promote menstrual health and hygiene through education, awareness and the distribution of reusable menstrual products to girls and women who may face barriers to accessing them.

We believe that menstruation should never prevent girls and women from attending school, participating in community life or pursuing their goals.

Reusable sanitary pads for primary school girls

We distribute reusable sanitary pads to primary school girls to help improve access to menstrual hygiene products and support dignified menstrual management.

Through menstrual health education and product distribution, we aim to help girls manage menstruation with greater confidence and reduce barriers that may affect school attendance and participation.

Menstrual cups for adult female youths and vulnerable women

We provide menstrual cups to adult female youths and vulnerable women in the community to improve access to reusable menstrual products and support sustainable menstrual health practices.

Our work promotes awareness of appropriate menstrual cup use, hygiene, safe handling and care, alongside information that helps recipients make informed choices about menstrual products.

Our menstrual health goals

  • Improve access to reusable menstrual hygiene products
  • Promote menstrual health education and informed product choices
  • Support dignity, confidence and participation in school and community life
  • Address stigma, myths and misinformation surrounding menstruation
  • Improve awareness of safe menstrual hygiene practices
  • Reach girls and women who experience barriers to accessing menstrual products

Our commitment: every girl and woman deserves to manage menstruation safely, comfortably and with dignity.

Community SRHR advocacy

Stronger communities for lasting change

We engage communities to address the social, cultural and informational barriers that prevent women, adolescents and young people from accessing sexual and reproductive health information and services.

Our community advocacy approach brings together young people, parents, community leaders and other stakeholders to encourage informed discussion and promote supportive environments for sexual and reproductive health.
